When James Maddison starts for Leicester against Tottenham on Saturday, there may be some senior figures at Spurs wondering what might have been.

Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, then in charge of QPR, raved about Maddison to his ex-colleagues, and a £350,000 deal was mooted.

For many years, they were the club for young talent outside the top flight — with Gareth Bale, Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker, Michael Dawson and Tom Huddlestone all successes.

In 2015, they came close to signing a teenage Maddison from Coventry after word spread about the prodigious attacking midfielder.

But Tottenham’s failure to land Maddison is part of a move away from the club’s policy of pursuing promising young players from the Football League.
