'We have got the quality to compete in every single game': Jan Vertonghen says Tottenham have all to play for despite Manchester United lossSpurs slipped to their second successive home defeat in the Premier League However they are still involved in four competitions as they seek silverware Jan Vertonghen still believes Spurs can do 'something special' this season

Jan Vertonghen insisted Tottenham still have everything to play for despite their defeat against Manchester United and an injury scare for Harry Kane.

Spurs slipped to their second successive home defeat in the Premier League and are trailing in third, nine points behind leaders Liverpool.

The title challenge is fading but Mauricio Pochettino's team are ahead at the halfway stage of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea, have an FA Cup fourth round tie at Crystal Palace and will face Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Jan Vertonghen says Spurs have all to play for despite defeat against Manchester United

'We are in four competitions and we have got the quality to compete in every single game and every single competition,' said Vertonghen. 'Hopefully we can do something special this season.

'We don't need to regroup, everyone saw how good we were against Manchester United. They're doing well but we showed our quality against theirs and we're still up there. They won, respect to them but I still think we're one of the strongest teams in the league.'

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game just before half-time and David de Gea produced a series of splendid saves in the second half to protect United's slender lead.

'He's a great goalkeeper,' said Vertonghen. 'A couple of the shots were in the middle but the others were great saves. We have great strikers. We were just unlucky. In other games we could score four or five in these types of games.

'This was not a game where we couldn't do things that we wanted to do. The quality and the aggressiveness was there. The only thing we couldn't do was score.'

Kane hurt an ankle in a challenge with Phil Jones in the final seconds of the game. He limped off and will be scanned when the swelling eases.

The injury scare is exacerbated by Heung-min Son's exit for international duty with South Korea at the Asian Cup. Moussa Sissoko was forced off with a groin injury in the first half.

An injury scare for Harry Kane compiled the misery for Spurs as their title challenge fades

'These two guys are just massive for us,' said Vertonghen, who was playing for the first time since nearly a month out with a thigh strain.

'Especially over the last couple of months, they've been immense. We've got other great players and they're also vital for us but we hope they'll both be back soon.

'It's one of those things but that's why we have the other guys, and the other guys have to stand up now. You've always seen that every time someone got injured, other people were there to perform. I hope we'll see that this time.'
