Jose Mourinho will be looking to make vital changes at Tottenham this summer as he bids to get the team challenging at the top once again.

It has not been a good season in north London and the side are in real danger of missing out on a Champions League place once football finally returns.

Mourinho initially claimed upon his arrival at the club in November that he wouldn't sign players in January as he was happy with his side, yet it soon became clear that additions had to be brought in following a dip in results.

Spurs' form in 2020 has highlighted that more changes need to take place and fans will be hoping that is the case ahead of next term.

What is going to prove difficult for Mourinho this summer is a lack of funds in the transfer market due to the coronavirus pandemic and the prospect of failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Money will have to be spent very wisely and that means a number of clubs will be looking to bring in players either on loan or on free transfers.

Two players who could save the club a lot of money this summer are Willian and Thomas Meunier due to the fact their contracts at Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are due to expire very soon.

Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg has also been heavily linked with a move to club and he would be a shrewd purchase given he will soon be in the final 12 months of his Southampton deal and the club could buy him for a reduced price.

But what would be Spurs' strongest XI if they sign all three players this summer?

Well, Meunier would go straight into the backline as the Lilywhites really need to sort out their issues at right-back.

Although Serge Aurier has contributed in terms of goals and assists since Mourinho's arrival, the Ivorian's performances are so erratic and the head coach needs to find a player who can deliver consistent displays week in, week out.

Another major issue at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season has been the lack of a defensive midfielder in the starting XI.

Here we take a look at what could be Jose Mourinho's strongest team for next season

Mourinho's decision to restore Eric Dier to the position just hasn't worked and Hojbjerg may prove to be the player to fill the void.

With his stats for winning the ball and then what he goes on to do with it very good, the Dane could be the perfect man to shield the back four and also allow Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele to push on and cause trouble in the final third.

Whereas there's a very good chance Meunier and Hojbjerg would start in Mourinho's best XI, it's hard to see where exactly Willian fits in due to the options already at the club.

Son is an automatic starter when fit and Steven Bergwijn has already shown how good he can be, thus meaning the Brazilian may have to make do with a place on the bench more often than not.

Willian would give the Tottenham squad more depth and his experience in big games could prove vital over the course of the season if he moves across the capital.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Meunier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Davies; Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Lo Celso; Son, Bergwijn, Kane.
