Tottenham have become the latest Premier League club to rule out a move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, clearing the way for Manchester United if they want to sign the Portugal star.

A number of English teams have been approached over Fernandes this summer by Sporting who are in need of the £50million they are demanding for the 24-year-old player.

Manchester City have already distanced themselves from speculation in Portugal linking them with Fernandes, and Spurs sources insist they have no interest in him either.

It's understood that Liverpool are not looking to strengthen in that position and even Leicester have rejected Sporting's advances.

United are believed to be weighing up their options as they prepare to sign two midfielders – one defensive, one creative – this summer as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's rebuilding project at Old Trafford.

They are focusing primarily on young British talent and maintain an interest in Newcastle's Sean Longstaff, but could be tempted to go for Fernandes who claimed 32 goals and 18 assists in 53 games for Sporting last season.

The former Udinese and Sampdoria player was also part of the Portugal squad that won the Nations League on home soil last weekend.

United have moved quickly in the pursuit of their targets this summer and have already signed winger Daniel James from Swansea for £17m.

They are expected to make an improved offer for Crystal Palace right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka after having an initial £40m bid rejected, and are vying with Manchester City for Leicester centre back Harry Maguire.
