Pochettino watched his side take a 1-0 lead when Heung-Min Son volleyed home Jan Vertonghen's left-wing cross two minutes into the second half.

And the Argentine manager felt it was important to get his defence bolted up to avoid conceding any crucial away goals.

So when Christian Pulisic almost broke the offside trap, Pochettino rushed into Lucien Favre's designated space to get his message across to his back five.

Young defender Juan Foyth, who was the deepest of the lot, was given an earful by his boss.

Fourth official Xavier Estraded, from Spain, was quick to tell Pochettino to get back in his own box.

And Favre also pulled a funny face as he looked behind him to see the Spurs manager.

Pochettino was seated for large parts of the first half but paced up and down his technical area as he nervously watched Dortmund's attempts to find an equaliser.

English youngster Jaden Sancho was a bright spark for the Bundesliga side in the opening period.

And Pochettino highlighted the winger's dangers before the match.

"We knew very well that he was capable of doing what he's doing now," Pochettino said.

"We were talking in the last few years that he was a massive prospect.

“Of course he is showing now in Germany that he can cope with the pressure to play in the Bundesliga or in the Champions League.

“And no, it doesn't surprise me. His talent is there and he's a very talented player."

But it was Dan-Axel Zagadou who came closest to scoring for Dortmund.

His point-blank header was kept out by a magnificent save by Hugo Lloris on the stroke of half-time.
