Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho has remained tight-lipped on his club's efforts to sign Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale as the transfer edges closer to completion.

"I'm not going to comment on Gareth Bale - a Real Madrid player," Mourinho said.

"I tried to sign him for Real Madrid which was not possible during my time there."

Tottenham are negotiating with Real over a one-year loan deal in which the La Liga side will cover 50 percent of Bale's £500,000-a-week salary.

The 31-year-old's agent, Jonathan Barnett, has admitted that the transfer is nearing completion, despite Mourinho keeping his cards close to his chest.

Bale left Spurs for Real in 2013 for a then-world record £86m fee.

"We'll see what happens, we have plenty of time in this transfer window and a couple of others as well. Time will tell but mainly I think the reason is that the decision is in Real Madrid's hands."
