The return of Mourinho to former club with Spurs is overshadowing this blatant fact – Opinion

Heading into tonight’s game against Manchester United, there seems to be one thing fans and the media care about, that being the return of Jose Mourinho to his former club.

Indeed, it is an easy narrative for the public to be gripped by.

After all, Mourinho was largely seen as a failure at United during his two-and-a-half seasons with the Premier League giants, with the Portuguese manager receiving the sack from the club in December of last year as per BBC Sport.

Yet as the papers drive their narrative of how Mourinho is returning to United and blah blah blah, not many seem to be stating the clear and blatant fact about tonight’s massive game for Tottenham that a win could see Spurs stake their claim for a spot in the Premier League top-four.

Spurs were 12 points off the top-four when Mourinho arrived at the north London side, yet just a few weeks after his appointment, Tottenham now finds themselves just six away from a Champions League spot in the league table as reported by talkSPORT.

Three points against United tonight could not only take Spurs closer to a top-four spot depending on what happens with Chelsea’s fixture against Aston Villa, but it will be a major sign of intent from Mourinho that he and his squad have what it takes to tackle the Premier League top-six head-on.

The Red Devils this season have managed to hold out to draws against both Arsenal and Liverpool, and Tottenham being able to claim a win against United will be a big step forward for Spurs in their dramatic U-turn to return to the top-four as well as be the bigger story from the match rather than Mourinho simply returning to one of his former stomping grounds in England.
