Jose Mourinho accused his Tottenham Hotspur players of taking Manchester United too lightly after his much publicised return to Old Trafford ended in a first defeat as Spurs manager.

I think United must obviously be happy with the points, and overall they deserved it.”

Dele Alli claimed Spurs should have known United would be desperate to prove a point against their former manager and were perhaps guilty of a “little bit of arrogance” and “overconfidence”.

But Mourinho claimed he had warned his players about exactly what to expect against United and insisted they only had themselves to blame.

“Normally they come from bad results against smaller teams, so when they face the big teams people think it’s going to be more difficult for them.

“I tried to fight exactly that state of mind,” he said.

We have to blame ourselves.
