Those supporters are hopeful second place City’s absence from the Champions League means a fifth place finish in the Premier League will be enough to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.

Fifth place in the Premier League could be enough for Tottenham to qualify for the Champions league because of Manchester City’s ban from the competition, according to the Guardian.

City have been fined £25 million by UEFA and barred from competing in the Champions League for the next two seasons after falling foul of Financial Fair Play regulations.

In any case, City’s plight is good news for Spurs, who should be motivated by their season objective becoming slightly more simple than before.

And now, the Guardian is claiming that is indeed the case, as long as City finish in the top four – which looks very likely – and their ban is not overturned on appeal.

Spurs have been outside of the top four all season but have closed the gap on Leicester City and Chelsea since Jose Mourinho took over as manager.

Chelsea look like the side most likely to slip up, but Tottenham aren’t the only team looking to take advantage – Sheffield United are currently fifth while Everton and Manchester United can both go above Mourinho’s men this weekend.
