Kevin Phillips believes that it would be ‘bad news‘ for Tottenham if Manchester City’s European ban is overturned, as reported by Sky Sports.

Earlier this week, football reporter Kaveh Solhekol revealed that the Premier League champions have “a decent chance of overturning this ban” as Khaldoon Al Mubarak is prepared to splash the cash on lawyers to fight the case in court.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, Phillips suggested the outcome will have the biggest effect on Spurs.

The former Southampton striker said: “If it does happen, it is going to affect someone and unfortunately, that looks like it will be Tottenham. It would be a bit of a blow. If it gets overturned it gets overturned and they will have to deal with it.”

“It will be bad news for someone. It is just like ‘Project Restart’ with the Premier League and Championship – it affects some in a good way and some in a bad way.”

City’s appeal against their ban will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport from June 8-10. Sky Blues star Kevin De Bruyne recently admitted he will reconsider his future at the Etihad Stadium if the punishment is upheld.

The Premier League champions were handed a two-year-sentence and a hefty fine for “serious breaches” of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play and club licensing regulations.

As things stand, it is hard to disagree with Phillips’ latest comments. Jose Mourinho’s side are currently eighth in the Premier League table, two points behind Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United and seven points away from a place in the top four.

Players returned to training at Enfield Training Centre for the next stage of the Premier League’s plans to restart the season, knowing they have a considerable task at hand in the months ahead to retain their place at European football’s top table.

Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League already hang in the balance and therefore their chances will be even more remote if the court overrules UEFA’s decision on Manchester City.
