Mauricio Pochettino has identified the three best players in the Premier League, including an unlikely Liverpool selection.

The former Tottenham Hotspur boss - who was sacked last November - picked no stars from his old team, so England captain Harry Kane and winger Son Heung-min missed out.

Instead, the Argentine turned to Premier League champions Manchester City and a surprising pick from league-leaders Liverpool for his three selections.

From City, Pochettino named Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero as his first two picks.

De Bruyne is considered one of the best midfielders in the world and leads the Premier League with 16 assists - four more than the nearest player.

Meanwhile, Aguero continues to prove he is one of the most prolific strikers in Europe and has scored 23 goals in 30 appearances this season.

The pair have been at vital to City's back-to-back title wins in the past two years, including an unprecedented 'centurion' season in 2017/18.

But while Aguero and De Bruyne would be shoo-ins for many fans' picks, Pochettino's capped his top three players in the Premier League with an unlikely selection.

When asked by Sky Sports to name his picks, he replied: "[Kevin] De Bruyne, one. [Sergio] Aguero. Another?

"De Bruyne is going to be unfair, I don't know what I can tell you, [Roberto] Firmino, maybe? Yes, but there are hundreds of players I can describe."

Pochettino's inclusion of Firmino is an unlikely one because the Brazilian forward is as much a facilitator for those around him as a goalscorer.

His fellow Liverpool forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah - who shared last season's Golden Boot - act as the main suppliers of goals despite playing in wider roles.

Mane has scored 16 goals this season across all competitions and Salah has netted 20 times, while Firmino has only found the back of the net 11 times.

However, the 28-year-old's 10 assists are the second-most of any Reds player and his performances have helped put Liverpool within touching distance of the Premier League title.
