Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has been pictured wearing Spurs gear while his son, Maurizio Pochettino, signed a new contract with the club.

Pochettino left Spurs in November when he was sacked and quickly replaced by Jose Mourinho, but his 19-year-old son remains in the junior ranks and has just pledged his immediate future to the club with an extension of his contract.

Pochettino Jr, a winger who followed his father to Spurs after previously being part of the academy at Mauricio’s old club Southampton, has stepped up to Under-23 level this season.

“Looking forwards to the new season,” the teenager posted on Instagram alongside images of him signing his new deal.

But arguably more striking for fans was the sight of Maurizio’s proud dad standing behind him dressed in a Spurs t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms.

Pochettino Sr. has not yet taken a new job since leaving the club in November, most likely due to a clause entitling Spurs to a reported £12.5m in compensation if he did so prior to 31 May.

The 48-year-old Argentine has most recently been linked with an ambitious Benfica, having also been heavily rumoured as a target for Newcastle when, or if, the proposed Saudi Arabia takeover is finally complete and fully signed off at St James’ Park.

Pochettino dressing in Spurs gear for his son’s contract renewal only serves to underline the strong feelings he has for the club. It was only in April that he admitted it remains his ‘dream’ to one day return to Tottenham to try and finish the project he started.

“It was an amazing journey that finished the way no one wanted it to finish. But deep in my heart I am sure our paths will cross again,” Pochettino explained to BT Sport at the time.

“From the day I left the club, my dream is to be back one day and to try to finish the work we didn’t finish. We were so close to winning the Premier League and Champions League.

Pochettino has not hidden his 'dream' to return to Spurs one day

“Of course, I am looking forward to moving on and I am so motivated for the next project. But deep inside I want to go back because the fans are so special. Maybe in five years, maybe in 10 years, but before I die, I want to manage Tottenham.”
