Manchester United chiefs have long-since made Mauricio Pochettino their No.1 choice to be Jose Mourinho's successor at Old Trafford.

With that realisation dawning, United are surveying an increasing number of potential managerial candidates, while Solskjaer's recent run has led some board members to think about a more long-term future with the Norwegian.

As such, is Florentino Perez - an admirer of BOTH men - comes calling and both Spurs chiefs are agreeable, then there United face being squeezed out.

Simply, they knew there was no chance of landing the Tottenham Hotspur manager in the middle of the season - particularly with Spurs on the heels of the top two in the Premier League title race.

Pochettino claimed this week Levy was easy to deal with, despite his reputation for tough negotiations: “For me, it’s the opposite.

For me, if there was one person that was easy to do business with, it was Daniel.” But Levy is determined to hold Pochettino to the contract he signed back in May.

However, one thing United bosses knew was that it wouldn't come easy, given that any move to land Pochettino would need to go through Spurs chief executive Daniel Levy.
