Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino admitted he is happy that Jose Mourinho was named as his replacement at Spurs.

Pochettino was dismissed by Spurs in November as the club sat 14th in the Premier League at the time. He was replaced by Mourinho, who has since stepped in and pulled Spurs up to eighth before the Premier League was suspended in March due to the coronavirus.

Pochettino and Mourinho have a close friendship from their spells in Spain. The Argentine was manager of Real Betis at the time while the Portuguese filled the demanding role of Real Madrid manager.

"When I arrived at the stadium [Santiago Bernabeu with Espanyol], Jose was waiting for me with a bag with a very nice bottle of French red wine and two kits of Real Madrid, shirts and shorts," Pochettino told The Guardian.

The former Spurs coach continued, "We have kept a good relationship. We have known each other for a long time. He’s a top coach. In life, look what happens. I always think, 'Oh, maybe one day I can take your place at Real Madrid' and he has taken my place at Tottenham. Unbelievable, eh? I am happy he has replaced me."

Pochettino concluded, "I am happy to leave the club in the way we left it, with the best facilities in the world. For sure, he is very grateful for the way we helped to build the club which is now his club."

Pochettino is now off the payroll after his six-month gardening leave ended, meaning he is free to take other jobs without the worry of prospective employers having to pay compensation. Multiple clubs, including Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Real Madrid have been linked with the 48-year-old.
