Man Utd star Paul Pogba ‘reckless’ against Tottenham - ex-referee makes red card claim

That is according to former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher.

Pogba’s challenge in Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Tottenham has caused plenty of debate since the match.

The Frenchman clearly caught England international Alli high on the thigh.

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness was convinced it was a red card but Jamie Redknapp says a yellow was enough punishment.

Gallagher has praised the performance of referee Mike Dean and claims he was right to only book Pogba, despite labelling the tackle from the Manchester United star "reckless".

“I think yellow card,” Gallagher told Sky Sports.

“I think he goes to win the ball with the other foot. I think he’s taken a step to go over it.

“He does go over the ball and he catches him on the back of the thigh.

“I think it’s reckless but think he genuinely goes to play the ball. I think Mike Dean got that right.

“I will also say for a 50-year-old guy, that was a magnificent refereeing performance in a fantastic match.

“And I would think today he’s got to be laying in bed until about 10 o’clock because he must have been tired the amount of work he did.”

Pogba threw the ball away after Dean had blown for a foul.

But Gallagher says once again Dean was right to not give Pogba a second yellow as he did not delay the restart.

“Moving onto the second bit, you ask ‘is he going to be second yellow carded for delaying the restart?’,” Gallagher continued.

“Well he didn’t really delay the restart because the restart couldn’t take place because Mike Dean had to give him a yellow card.

“He probably had to speak to him and say ‘look, I think you’re reckless, that’s a high-tariff yellow card’, if you like.”
