Manchester United held off their old boss Jose Mourinho to pick up their first win in four games, as Marcus Rashford struck twice against Tottenham. But they didn’t have it all their own way as Spurs threw the kitchen sink in the closing stages.

Player ratings

Manchester United

De Gea 6

Good block to stop Aurier, unlucky rebound fell to Alli. Not threatened unduly.

Wan-Bissaka 6

Couple of crunching early challenges but largely anonymous going forward

Lindelof 6

Not wholly convincing early but grew into the game as it progressed

Maguire 5

Not his best display and up against top class in Kane but not an inspirational performance

Young 6

Largely mistake free but unambitious going forward but a good performance from the full back

Fred 7

Growing in confidence, some good distribution and crucial block of goal-bound effort from Son

McTominay 6

Solid and aggressive presence in the middle on return from three matches out with ankle injury

James 6

Didn’t get too much change out of Vertonghen but occasional flashes of pace threatened

Lingard 8

Waspish contribution in first half, assist for first and set up Greenwood. Back to form showing.

Rashford 8

Slightly lucky to beat Gazziniga with shot for opener, brilliantly denied from distance on 25 minutes. Clattered in challenge with keeper on 45.

Greenwood 6

Shot well blocked from Gazzaniga first half, shackled by Alderweireld and subbed late on

Tottenham (4-2-3-1)

Gazzaniga 8

Poor effort to keep out Rashford’s early shot, made amends with some superb blocks

Aurier 5

Let down by poor final delivery on the occasions he got into promising positions. Decent shot blocked led to goal

Alderweireld 6

Patrolled deep and kept Greenwood quiet. Solid denough display sweeping up

Sanchez 4

His dithering led directly to United’s opener capping a nervy display from the Colombian

Vertonghen 7

Joined in attacks down the left flank effectively and generally coped with threat of James well

Winks 6

Booked for two-footed challenge on James early. Took a knock to his ankle. Subbed

Sissoko 4

Rash challenge led to soft United penalty. Poor distribution in an error strewn display

Lucas Moura 4

Ineffective and struggled to make any sort of impact on the game. Subbed

Dele 8

Peripheral figure until moment of magic lit up game on 38 minutes. Superb in tight spaces

Son 7

Lovely feet to trick his way into box on half hour and shot blocked by Fred second half.

Kane 7

Starved of service but never stopped running. Deserved better.

Eriksen 64 minutes (for Moura)

Ndombele 70 minutes (for Winks)
