Tottenham Hotspur will resume their fight to try and force their way into the Champions League places when they face Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.

A victory for Spurs over the Premier League strugglers would lift them up to fifth in the table, just one point shy of Chelsea, who are not in action until Monday night when they take on Manchester United.

Should Spurs get the victory and Chelsea stumble against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, it could offer Jose Mourinho, the Spurs boss, and his players real hope that securing a Champions League place is well within reach.

But whether Spurs do force their way into the Champions League or not next term, improvements have got to be made to the squad, with Mourinho no doubt planning to put his own stamp of authority on the squad he inherited from former boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Here, we round-up all of the very latest Tottenham transfer news.

Ake would be a bargain, says ex-goalkeeper

If Tottenham were to conclude a £40million summer deal for Bournemouth centre-back Nathan Ake then it would be a 'bargain,' says former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

According to Spurs Web, Robinson is adamant that splashing out £40million on the Netherlands international would be money well spent, with Mourinho looking to bolster his defensive options.

Robinson told Football Insider: "At £40million, it’s a cheap price for a player of that quality. For a fee at that level, you’re getting a good player.

"He’s had another good season, for me he’s just not big enough for a centre-half, he’s not quite tall enough, not imposing enough but I think he makes up for that in other areas and he’s a top-quality centre-half."

Tottenham have joined Premier League rivals Sheffield United in the race to sign Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, according to Turkish Football.

A source close to Turkish Football has told them that Spurs are keen on landing the 21-year-old, as are the Blades and several sides in the Bundesliga.

It is no secret that Tottenham are keen to add a new body to their goalkeeping department, with the club having been recently linked with free-agent shot-stopper Ted Smith.

AC Milan enter Vertonghen chase

AC Milan have become the latest club to join the queue to try and sign out-of-contract Spurs centre-back Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgium international's current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium draws to a close at the end of the season, meaning he is free to start speaking with clubs abroad about possibly linking up with them in the summer.

And according to Sempre Milan, AC have joined the race to sign the 32-year-old, who is also attracting interest from Juventus and Ajax.
