Jose Mourinho's tactics called into question after Tottenham's defeat to Everton

Tottenham's recent start to the new campaign was far from ideal, with Jose Mourinho suffering defeat on the opening day of a Premier League season for the first time in his career.

Spurs lost 1-0 at home to Everton, with the performance arguably being more concerning than the final scoreline as Mourinho's men amassed a total of just nine shots in comparison to 15 posted by the Toffees.

Spurs generally looked well-balanced, but things changed on the pitch.

The Portuguese boss ended the match with Kane, Son, Moura, Sissoko and Steven Bergwijn on the field.

Some of Mourinho's tactical intentions in the past have been sensible despite the need to look closely in order to identify exactly what he's attempting to do but this time around, it doesn't appear that simple.

There was little to no urgency with or without possession despite Spurs trailing for around 40 minutes of the match, and the overall strategy was unrecognisable.

The 3-2-4-1 shape with the ball that Spurs have formed in previous contests under Mourinho looked staged to happen once more, albeit with Doherty offering a more reliable presence than Serge Aurier on the right.
