Spurs stars aiming for chance under Mourinho

There will be some players at Tottenham who will be looking to prove a point to head coach Jose Mourinho, now that training has resumed at Hotspur Way.’s Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold has picked out seven of the squad who will want to get themselves in contention for the remaining nine matches of the campaign, as well as for next season.

First up, Alasdair picks Tanguy Ndombele, with Mourinho believed to have been impressed with the French midfielder’s work during lockdown, amid his bid to improve his fitness.

He also chooses young Irish striker Troy Parrott, declaring that the teenager will want to convince Mourinho that he deserves more opportunities in a Spurs shirt.

Alasdair believes that Argentina international Juan Foyth needs to prove that he can be trusted, while writing that youngster Oliver Skipp could become Mourinho’s next Scott McTominay-style project.

Defenders Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez are two more the reporter singles out, along with  summer signing Ryan Sessegnon, whom he states will be doing plenty of strength work to make himself stronger as a defender.

Homegrown talent may ease Europe problems

Clubs that take part in the Champions League are only allowed to register 17 non-locally trained players in their 25-man squad – which could give Jose Mourinho a headache.

Former boss Mauricio Pochettino had the same problem, with the Argentine said to be devastated to leave Juan Foyth out at the beginning of 2018 after Lucas Moura arrived from Paris Saint-Germain.

If Spurs do qualify for European competition next season, Mourinho could make things easier for himself by bringing in homegrown players,’s Rob Guest writes.

Tottenham during the break

Rob has suggested bringing in Queens Park Rangers’ forward Eberechi Eze, Norwich City right-back Max Aarons, soon-to-be-out-of-contract Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana, Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Leeds’ on-loan Brighton and Hove Albion centre-half Ben White.

“Magnificent” attack is timely boost for Spurs

The return of quartet Moussa Sissoko, Steven Bergwijn, Son Heung-min and Harry Kane has given Jose Mourinho a boost, according to’s Rob Guest.

He points out that this week was the first time Kane and Bergwijn had been on the training pitch together since the Dutchman’s move to the club at the end of January.

Rob explains that Mourinho has not yet been able to unleash a front three of Bergwijn, Son and Kane, writing that “Kane with Bergwijn and Son either side of him has all the makings of a ‘magnificent’ attack, which could prove to be the difference between Champions League and Europa League football once league action finally resumes.”
