The visitors were underdogs heading into the match at Wembley but created the best chances in the first half.

And United took the lead just before the break, with Marcus Rashford finishing off a fine counter attack with a sublime finish.

Paul Pogba found Rashford with an exquisite pass and the England international struck across Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Souness was working as a pundit for the Premier League clash and was full of praise for Manchester United at half time.

And the Liverpool legend even spoke positively of Pogba, who he has often criticised in the past.

“United have been fabulous,” Souness said on Sky Sports.

“Rock-solid defensively, don’t have any passengers and they’ve been really threatening on the break.

“Really, really good team effort in that 45.

“Obviously Tottenham are a team that come after you, they’re pushed right up the pitch.

“When you do win it and have players with the pace of [Anthony] Martial and Rashford, you’ve got someone like Pogba who can deliver on a pass.

“I don’t know what [Kieran] Trippier is thinking here, that’s a poor pass.

“Two-touches to get it out of his [Pogba’s] feet here.

“One, two, he knows what he wants to do with it once he gets it out of his feet and Rashford’s on his way already.

“That is classic counter-attacking football.

“Sloppy play as we said from Trippier, one, two, out my feet, and he can do that, he’s [Pogba's] got the quality to do that.”
