The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Tottenham look to have beaten off competition from Manchester United to the signing of Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon.

The 23-year-old defender, who has three years remaining on his contract at the Bernabeu, impressed during a loan spent at fellow La Liga outfit Sevilla, in which he made 38 appearances in all competitions, including the Europa League final against Inter Milan.

His excellent form saw him recently earn a call-up to Spain’s senior side, where he made his debut in their 4-0 victory over Ukraine in the UEFA Nations League.

Ornstein believes that United had previously held discussions with the defender, but Tottenham have stepped in and are close to completing a deal to sign Reguilon on a permanent basis from Madrid – with the Athletic journalist reporting that the transfer isn’t done yet, but described Spurs’ chances as ‘highly possibly.’

Ben Davies has been Mourinho’s first-choice left-back since his arrival, but with Danny Rose likely to be sold this window and Ryan Sessegnon still not trusted, the Portuguese has opted to bolster his full-back department with what would be his fourth signing.
