After the players emerged from the tunnel for their Champions League last-16 clash an announcement was made over the Wembley tannoy that there would be a minute silence in remembrance of Emiliano Sala and Gordon Banks.

Sala's body was recovered from plane wreckage at the bottom of the English Channel last week following the tragic events which happened shortly after signing for Cardiff from Nantes for £15million.

England's 1966 World Cup-winning goalkeeper Banks passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday night.

And supporters inside Wembley rose to their feet to remember both men.

However, when a photograph of the pair was shown on the big screen around 30 seconds in the Dortmund fans began clapping.

The entire stadium - along with the Tottenham and Dortmund players - were caught in confusion as half joined in and half stayed silent.

The excited Dortmund supporters were likely wanting to pay their own tribute to Sala, whose death has rocked the football world.

Meanwhile, a host of legendary players have recently paid tribute to Banks after his surprise passing was announced earlier this week.

Sir Bobby Charlton, who was part of the World Cup-winning team, hailed his former team-mate.

"Gordon was a fantastic goalkeeper, without doubt one of the best England has ever had," he said.

"I was proud to call him a team-mate.

"Obviously we shared that great day in 1966 but it was more than that.

"Even though I was on the pitch and have seen it many times since, I still don't know how he saved that header from Pele."

And former goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who replaced Banks at Leicester, tweeted:"I'm devastated - today I've lost my hero."

All Premier League clubs are expected to hold a minute silence for Banks before their next match.
