Arsenal and Tottenham transfer target Djene Dakonam is available for £22m this month with Mikel Arteta and Jose Mourinho both looking at the Getafe star as an option to bolster their respective defences. The centre-back, who’s more commonly known by just his first name, has forged a reputation as one of La Liga’s top defensive performers and has been named in the Spanish top-flight’s team of the year for the past couple of years.

Djene was accompanied by Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique in those composite teams of La Liga’s best players, but would have to make do with less illustrious team-mates at Arsenal.

David Luiz, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi have all failed to reach the heights expected of them at the Emirates and Arteta will hope Djene will represent an upgrade if the Gunners hammer out a deal.

The Sun report Getafe rate Djene around the £22m mark and are holding firm on that figure as clubs circle during the January transfer window.

Monaco are reported to have a bid just shy of £13m knocked back by Getafe chiefs, who will be hoping Arsenal and Tottenham’s interest can spark a bidding war.

Tottenham boss Mourinho might have to press hard for Daniel Levy to loosen the purse strings given the Spurs’ chairman’s frugality.

Hs attempts to land Djene coul, though, be given a boost if the north Londoners manage to raise some funds by selling Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan.

Everton, who are short of a centre-back after Kurt Zouma returned to Chelsea last summer, are also said to be interested in getting Djene on board.

Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Southampton are likewise eager to bring the Togo international to the Premier League to strengthen their respective squads.

Express Sport revealed last year that Leicester, West Ham and Watford had looked into a potential deal for Djene.

Djene, who is under contract until 2023, has played his international football alongside Emmanuel Adebayor and last year revealed how the former Arsenal and Tottenham striker has influenced his career.

"Adebayor isn't just a team-mate, he is more like an older brother to me," Djene said. "He has played for the best clubs in Europe's top championships and has a wealth of experience which is very important in football nowadays.

"Before joining Getafe, we had a chat and he explained to me why I should go to Spain instead of anywhere else and since then we've stayed in touch.

"He played in Spain and has a knowledge of the league which I've been learning from. His words have been helpful and I'm grateful to him."
