AC Milan director Paolo Maldini has strongly suggested that the Italian club are looking to sign Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier.

The 27-year-old Ivory Coast captain asked to leave Tottenham last summer but a move never materialised.

Milan were interested in signing him last year and have now been linked again with the defender, with reports from Italy suggesting that talks have already begun over a move for Aurier, who has two years left on the contract he signed when he joined Spurs for £23million in 2017.

Maldini was asked about the transfer talks to sign Aurier ahead of Milan's 3-0 win over Cagliari on Saturday night.

"We spoke to his agent last year, to be honest, now we’ll see how the next few weeks go," Maldini told Sky Sports Italia with a smile.

Aurier was not first choice last season under Mauricio Pochettino, with Kieran Trippier the main right-back.

However, since Trippier's departure to Atletico Madrid, the Ivorian has made 42 competitive appearances for Tottenham, contributing two goals and eight assists.

His performances have improved on the whole under Jose Mourinho, who has given him more of an attacking role in the side, however Aurier continues to divide opinion among Tottenham fans due to the inconsistent nature of his displays.

Tottenham could also sell their only other natural right-back in Kyle Walker-Peters. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a successful loan spell at Southampton and could be used as part of a deal for the Saints' Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Selling Aurier as well would require Tottenham to sign two new right-back, unless Mourinho decides that young versatile central defender Japhet Tanganga, could provide good enough cover in the role for one new signing.

Aurier has had a tough time of late, with his younger brother killed in France last month. He bravely managed to combine returning to France to be with his family without missing a game for Spurs in the final fortnight of the campaign.

Reports in Italy have suggested that Aurier could be signed for just £13.5million from Tottenham.

However, it would seem unlikely that the north London club would take a near £10million hit on a player who still has a couple of years left on his deal and has been a near ever-present Premier League regular this season.
