Jan Vertonghen is seeking a two-year contract extension at Tottenham

According to ESPN, Jan Vertonghen is demanding a new two-year contract from Tottenham Hotspur as talks over extending his stay at the club drudge on.

FIFA have granted clubs the option to extend contracts for players whose deals are set to expire before the domestic seasons can be completed.

Vertonghen’s current contract with the Lilywhites runs out at the end of June. The club had opened talks in order to extend his deal beyond June and until at least the end of the season. However, the Belgian international is adamant over his demands, as he seeks a two-year extension on his current £70,000-a-week contract. (h/t ESPN)

Jan Vertonghen’s contract expires in June

However, Tottenham have shown no willingness to meet Vertonghen’s demand, meaning he could be on his way out when his existing deal expires. That would mean the Belgian centre-back may not be with the club for the final run-in of the 2019/20 campaign.

Vertonghen joined our club back in 2012 from Dutch giants Ajax in a £12m deal. During his time the club, the Belgian international grew into one of the most reliable defenders in the Premier League.

However, the 33-year-old has shown signs of age catching up with him over the course of 2019/20 campaign. The veteran defender has featured in just 19 Premier League games this season, with injuries hampering him as well.

With negotiations over an extension not going as per plans, the prospect of ending the season without Vertonghen in the squad is looming large. (h/t ESPN)

The Project Restart in the Premier League is going on in full flow. Players have returned to team training this week as a mid-June return is being targeted.

Tottenham are currently eighth in the league table, seven points below Chelsea in the fourth place. Having Vertonghen for the final run-in would’ve been beneficial as games are likely to come thick and fast. It now remains to be seen if the club and the player reach an agreement in the coming weeks.
